About Mecca California
Mecca is a city in Riverside California. It lies within the Colorado Desert and has an arid desert climate. Mecca is north of the Salton Sea of the Coachella Valley. It is mostly an agricultural community that is unincorporated. The most significant piece of Mecca’s history is that developers looking to irrigate farm land in the area accidentally re-routed the Colorado River into the Salton Basin for two years. This accident killed untold amounts of wildlife throughout the years and is often considered the largest environmental disaster in California’s history. The salinity of the Salton Sea is 44 g/l which is much more than the Pacific Ocean at 35 g/l. This high salinity creates a greater water density and as an effect of that, the Salton Sea is the best place in the world for power boat racing.
