About Thermal California
The unincorporated area of Thermal California was originally known as Kokell. Thermal began its existence as a named area as a railroad camp for Southern Pacific Railroad workers. Permanent structures were constructed in the 1930s. By the 1950s an irrigation canal turned the area into a thriving agricultural center. A large airport called Jacke Cochran Regional Airport has been proposed for the area. An interesting fact about Thermal is that large portions of land in the area are owned by the Kohl family which is the same family that started the nationwide chain of Kohl’s department stores. Thermal has a desert climate and is warm year-round. The hottest temperature ever recorded in Thermal is 126 degrees Farenheight.
